TUNA TASTING AND ALMADRABA BOAT TOUR

Each month, we bring you with us on a special event that combines a food tasting and an exciting activity in Conil.
May in Conil is the month of red tuna and Amlaabraba.

Almadraba is a 3,000-year-old, sustainable Spanish fishing technique used to catch Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) during their spring migration from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. It involves a complex labyrinth of nets anchored near the coast to trap the fish, which are then harvested by skilled fishermen

On this combo tour, we will take you out at sea to witness a real Levantà, the climax of the ancient almadraba fishing ritual and then enjoy a cornucopia of freshly cought blue fin tuna, prepared in all its possible variations.

DESCRIPTION

On this excursion to observe the Almadraba of Conil, you will depart directly from the fishing port of Conil and sail along the coastline until you reach the location where the almadraba nets are set, approximately 20 minutes away by boat. Once there, your guide  will park the boat very close to the copo, the section where “La Levantá” takes place, allowing you to witness firsthand the work carried out by the almadraberos and divers in the capture of these magnificent bluefin tuna. Throughout the journey, your guide will explain the entire process and its history, including the migratory route followed by the tuna and the ancient spotting and net-setting techniques that have been used for centuries in this three-thousand-year-old fishing tradition.

You will observe how the Captain directs each maneuver, while the divers underwater guide the tuna through the network of nets toward the copo, the final compartment of this intricate structure, where “La Levantá” is ultimately carried out.

Here, you will see how the almadraberos, surrounding the perimeter of the copo with barges, gradually raise the nets so that the tuna are brought closer to the surface. This is the moment when the water becomes most active, as these powerful fish stir the sea with their movements.

Next, the divers will begin the capture of these giants of the sea using the traditional “Lupara” technique, ensuring the fish are harvested with minimal stress and suffering. This method guarantees the highest quality for each specimen, making these bluefin tuna among the most exquisite and highly prized in the world.

Once each tuna has been captured, you  will watch as it is carefully hoisted aboard by the vessel’s crane, offering you the opportunity to appreciate the impressive size of these magnificent specimens in their entirety before they are gently placed onto the decks of the barges for transport either to the Japanese vessel or to the Gadira facilities at the port of Barbate.

When the barges leave the almadraba to begin their journey toward the Japanese vessel or the port of Barbate, you will start your way back to the port of Conil, where this extraordinary Almadraba excursion will come to an end.

During our time at the Almadraba, while observing the entire “La Levantá” process, beverages will be available on board, including water, soft drinks, and beer.

After such a unique, authentic and incredible experience, you will return to the village, and we will start the tuna fest by hitting some of the best restaurants in town and try blue fin tuna in all its possible variations:  tataki, atartare, the traditional encebollado de Conil, grilled, and more...your Tuna Day will be an experiecne you will never forget!
